Marion E. Goodwyn, May 15, 1924 - February 11, 2017

Marion E. Goodwyn

Marion Goodwyn of Eau Claire, WI passed away peacefully on February 11, 2017 at the Dove Nursing Home with members of her family present.  Marion left a legacy of music, faith, and memories, and she will be missed by many.

She was born in 1924 in Cumberland, WI, to Anthony and Carmella (DeNucci) Gidio.  She graduated from high school and was married at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Cumberland in 1946 to Arthur Goodwyn who preceded her in death.  She was also preceded in death by her parents; her brothers Frank, Lawrence (Lois), and Tom; her sisters Ann (Martin) Wick, Louise (Howard) Steinburg, Christy (Pat) Capra, and Irene (John) Bowers; her brother-in-law George Meads; her nephew Richard Steinburg; her nieces Marie Stevens and Gloriann Capra; and her great-granddaughter Drew Barden.

Marion joyfully expressed her Catholic faith as an active member of both St. Anthony's in Cumberland and St. James the Greater in Eau Claire.  She sang in the church choirs, taught catechism, and volunteered at nursing homes, visiting the elderly and leading the Rosary.  She enjoyed crocheting, baking, and she and her beloved husband Art entertained their family with stories and memories from their childhoods.  Throughout her life she maintained affectionate ties to her extended Italian American family.  Above all, Marion will be remembered for her love of music and her beautiful singing voice.  In addition to her participation in church choirs, she sang in dance combos who included her brothers Frank and Lawrence who played guitar and bass.  She was also in a small country-western band that performed in the Eau Claire area.  During her final years at the Dove Nursing Home, she could always be counted on to join in during music programs or to sing when prompted with the beginning of a song lyric.

Marion is survived by her four children:  Patricia (Joe) Reynders, Mary (Don) Barden, Tom (Kraig Kowalke), and Rebecca (Don Petrik); by six grandchildren:  Peter Barden (Kirk Williams), Susan (Randy) House, Jennifer (Jon) Chermack, Nicholas (Rachelle) Knudtson, Luke Barden (Amanda), and Katherine (Mark) Holzinger; by thirteen great-grandchildren:  Erin, Faith, Kaden, Isaac, Abigail, Hannah, Lucas, Sarah, Maximus, Rebecca, Molly, Joshua, and Jonathan; by her sisters-in-law Elvira Meads, Marge Lindemann, and Vonnie Gideo, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the Parish of St. James the Greater, her long-time primary care doctor, Richard Horecki, MD, and the tireless, outstanding caregivers at the Dove Nursing Home.

Visitation will take place from 4-7 pm on Wednesday evening at Fuller Speckien Hulke Funeral Home and at the church Thursday morning from 10:30 am until the time of service. Funeral service will take place at 11:30 am on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at St. James the Greater Catholic Church, 2502 11th Street, Eau Claire, WI 54703 with Father Tom Krieg officiating.  Burial will take place in Lakeview Cemetery in Eau Claire immediately following the funeral service.

Just wanted to say I am sorry for your loss. Marion was a great lady to know. She and I volunteered together at St.James teaching CCD years ago and I loved her smile, her joy of life and her readiness to tackle anything. She was full of life. We often gabbed before/after classes and enjoyed her when we teachers met together. Her singing voice was special, too. Loved her singing in choir. Once in awhile I would give her a ride home, and those trips were fun. As the years went on, we drifted apart. Wish I had kept in touch. She was a special lady. Count yourself lucky to have had her in your family. Bet you have some neat memories of her. May she rest in peace.
