Elsie M. (Brettingen) Stevens Play Memorial Video

Elsie M. Stevens, 89 passed away peacefully Monday May 15, 2017 in her home at Lake Wissota Woods, with family at her side.

Elsie was born June 8 1927 to Alf M. and Bertha M (Olson) Brettingen in Colfax, WI. Elsie graduated from Elk Mound H.S. in 1945. After graduation she became a phone operator where she met Sherman P. Paulson and they were married on June 28 1947. For a short time they resided in Elk Lake and Eau Claire and then purchased their home in Altoona in 1952 where they raised their 4 children.

In 1957 they bought a summer cabin on Potato Lake in Rusk County where family, friends and friendly neighbors always had an open invitation to visit. So you never knew who or what to expect in the way of entertainment.

In February 1961, Elsie became 1st Lady of Altoona when Sherman became Mayor, during his mayoral term Sherman passed on November 4, 1962.

Elsie was very proud of her 50+ years of membership with the Order of qEastern Star which began in Altoona with chapter #180 and was a current member of the Ellsworth chapter #116 until her passing.

Elsie and the other neighborhood Mom's shared in the responsibilities of keeping all the kids in the neighborhood safe .ie.. Driving them to school on those way below zero blistery wintery days in her 59 Ford station wagon.

In the early 70’s Elsie began working at Wisconsin Carpenters Health, Welfare and Pension Plans at the Labor Temple on Birch St in Eau Claire where she met Ronald C Stevens. They married April 26th 1975.

In March of 1977 Elsie and Ron got the heck outta dodge as it was -40 degrees below zero and moved to sunny Southern California where Ron began working at USA Administrators in Beverly Hills, CA

In 1982 they moved to Northern California where Ron worked at Health Services in Livermore and Elsie worked from home to start their own business as 3rd party administrators which is known as Sierra Administrators, as they both loved the Sierra Mountains, and was located in Dublin, CA.

In 1996 purchased their existing home on Lake Wissota where they retired and lived happily ever after.

Everyone enjoyed Elsie's quick witted sense of humor until the day she passed. Elsie was very generous, always there to help and patient beyond words. Some of Elsie's many enjoyments were the cottage at Potato Lake, hosting family and friends.

Elsie also enjoyed decorating all of her homes, even the outhouse at the cottage, with its red/white striped exterior with poison ivy decals on both seats and named it the Candy Cane house.

Elsie's other interests included shopping, traveling, fishing, and she always had lady luck by her side at all the casino's and of course her two favorite TV show's Family Feud and Wheel of Fortune.

Elsie's children: Randal Sherman Paulson (Debbie Sue), Douglas Gene Paulson, Debra Kay Lemke, Sheryl Jo (Harold) Griffith. My condolences to your family. Was your father Sherman Paulson (Mayor of Altoona) the brother of Betty Thompson of Eau Claire ? My sister and I lived with the Thompson's in the late fifties. Any memories of this as children ?
    Again, sorry for your loss.
    Best Regards,
    Michael and Julie Erickson
